Tituba

I saw a black dog running,

Weaving between webs of twine

Made by my white lies

Told to save my skin –

But I saw Goody Proctor eating

The skin straight from the back of a chicken,

Its blood splashing by the

Red of her eyes.

I saw a yellow bird flying,

Wings flapping towards the sun.

It said it would take me home,

Away from this frozen state –

But I saw Goody Nurse pluck

My bird from the sky

Snapping it clean in two

And she shared it with the devil.

I saw a cat fighting with a fox,

Piercing screams filling the air,

Violent but oh-so natural

All part of God’s plan.

But I saw Goody Good by the bonfire

With the same screams ripping

From her own throat

And the fox dead at her feet.
